Kenya’s drive towards greater energy security, industrialisation and regional economic integration has received a major boost following the groundbreaking of the Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery in Lamu County on 30 September 2026.

The landmark project brings together strategic infrastructure, large-scale industrial investment and regional cooperation, positioning Lamu as an emerging energy and trade hub while strengthening Africa’s capacity to process its resources within the continent.

The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, Dr William Samoei Ruto, alongside Dangote Group President and Chief Executive Officer Aliko Dangote. It was attended by Heads of State and Government from across Africa, Cabinet Secretaries, Members of Parliament, the Chief of the Defence Forces, Service Commanders, General Officers, senior government officials, business leaders and other distinguished guests.
