Chagua took a lot of work to build: the writing, the design, the software and the way public election information is gathered, checked and organised for Kenyan voters. This page explains what belongs to Chagua, what does not, what you are welcome to do, and what you need our permission for.
We want more civic information in Kenya, not less. Anyone may build their own election service. What they may not do is copy ours: our words, design, code, compiled data or name.
What belongs to Chagua
- Our name and brand. The name “Chagua” as used for this service, our logo, the tagline “Know. Choose. Vote.” and the look of the site are trade marks of Chagua.
- Our writing. Guides, explainers, profile layouts, race wording, page text and translations in English and Kiswahili.
- Our design. Page layouts, graphics, icons, colour scheme, the ballot and race tools, and how the site looks and works.
- Our software. The code that runs Chagua, including our own plugins and theme.
- Our compiled data. The way we select, arrange, check and connect information: candidate and party profiles, the region structure from county to ward, seat and race pages, and race records. Under the Copyright Act, 2001 of Kenya, compilations of data and computer programs are protected as literary works.
What does not belong to Chagua
- Public facts and official records. Information published by the IEBC, Parliament, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, the Council of Governors, county assemblies and the Kenya Gazette belongs to the public. Anyone may use these facts from the original source.
- Content from candidates and parties. Photos, manifestos and statements that candidates, parties or their teams submit stay theirs. They give Chagua a licence to show them, as set out in our Terms of Use.
- Party names, symbols and logos belong to the parties.
What you are welcome to do
- Link to any Chagua page and share it on social media, WhatsApp or by SMS.
- Quote short passages or show a screenshot for news reporting, research, teaching, review or commentary, as long as you name “Chagua (chagua.co.ke)” as the source and link back where you can.
- Print a page for your own use or to help others register and vote.
- Put Chagua’s free election cards on your website using the code from Chagua widgets, keeping the “Data: Chagua” line and link.
What needs our written permission
- Copying our site design, layouts or tools, or making a site or app that looks like Chagua.
- Republishing our guides, profiles or other content in full or in large parts, on another website, app, channel or in print.
- Scraping, bulk downloading or automatically collecting data from Chagua, or reusing our compiled data in another product.
- Using our name, logo or tagline, or a confusingly similar name, logo or web address, for an election, voter-information or polling service.
- Suggesting that Chagua endorses, sponsors or works with you, a candidate, a party or a campaign.
- Presenting Chagua race results as an official result, a scientific survey or a forecast, or publishing them in breach of the Publication of Electoral Opinion Polls Act, 2012.
Newsrooms, researchers and civic organisations who want to use our data or content more widely can ask us for a licence. We are glad to work with partners who share our neutral, voter-first approach. Write to us through Contact us.
If you see Chagua being copied
Tell us through Contact us. Include the link to the copy, what it copies and, if you can, a screenshot. We may ask the site owner or host to remove it, send a takedown notice and take other steps open to us under Kenyan law.
If you think we have used your work
If something on Chagua belongs to you and should not be here, or is not credited correctly, use Report a correction or Contact us. We will look at it promptly and remove or correct it where needed.
