Content placed on public profiles may be visible to anyone on the internet.

Do not submit private information you do not want published.

Some profiles about candidates, parties and other public figures are created by us from public sources, without the person’s prior involvement. We publish political information in the public interest. You can ask us to correct or remove information about you through our Request a correction page.

8. Races and your vote

A vote in a Chagua race can show a political opinion, which the Data Protection Act, 2019 treats as sensitive personal data. This is how we handle it:

  • Signing in: votes that count in a race’s result come from signed-in accounts, one vote per account. We record that your account has voted in a race.
  • Continue with Google or Facebook: if you choose one, Google or Facebook tells us your name, email address and an account number, which we use only to create or find your Chagua account. We do not post anything to your account or see your friends.
  • Phone number sign-in: we send your number to our SMS provider (Africa’s Talking) to deliver a one-time code. We do not keep your number: your account stores only a coded fingerprint of it, so the same number always finds the same account. Codes expire after 10 minutes.
  • Guest votes: if you vote without signing in, we set a cookie on your device so it gets one guest vote per race, and we keep a coded fingerprint of that cookie with your choice. To limit repeat voting we also keep a coded label of your network for the day, never your IP address itself, and clear it after two days. Guest votes are shown separately as unverified and are not part of a race’s result.
  • Your choice is stored apart from your account: the choice itself is saved as an anonymous ballot, without your name, email or user ID.
  • Changing your vote: in election races where you can change your vote, your ballot is linked to a coded key made from your account and the race with a secret kept only on our server. We delete these coded keys 90 days after the race closes.
  • Timing: after one day we keep only the date a ballot was cast, not the exact time.
  • What we publish: only totals. We never publish how any person voted. Candidates, parties and campaigns cannot see who voted or how, and we do not sell your vote or use it for advertising or campaigning.
  • Who can see the records: only a small number of Chagua staff who run the site, for security and to fix problems.
  • Legal quiet period: as the Publication of Electoral Opinion Polls Act, 2012 requires, voting closes and race results are hidden in the five days before a general election and on election day.

Each race page has an “About this race” box saying who ran it, who can vote and when. See also How races work.

9. Data retention

  • Account data: while your account is active and for up to 24 months after you close it.
  • Contact form messages: up to 24 months.
  • Race records: anonymous ballots and totals are kept as a public record. The record that your account voted in a race is kept while your account exists. Coded keys for changing a vote are deleted 90 days after the race closes.
  • Payment records: as long as tax and accounting law require.
  • Public profile content: while the listing is published. We aim to remove it within 30 days of a valid deletion request, unless we must keep it for legal reasons.

10. Your rights

Subject to Kenyan law, you may request to:

  • access your personal data
  • correct inaccurate data
  • withdraw consent where applicable
  • request deletion where legally allowed
  • object to certain processing
  • You can also complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (odpc.go.ke) if you believe we have not handled your personal data properly.

To make a request, email [email protected].

Deleting your account (including accounts made with Google, Facebook or a phone number): email [email protected] from the email address on your account, or tell us the phone number you signed in with, and ask us to delete your account. We delete it within 30 days. Anonymous ballots stay in race totals because they cannot be linked to you. If you signed in with Facebook, you can also remove Chagua in Facebook: Settings & privacy → Settings → Apps and websites.
