Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a police officer suspected of being the gunman in the fatal shooting of prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, marking a major breakthrough nearly a year after the murder.
Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot was taken into custody following an intensive, year-long investigation into the September 9, 2025, ambush along Magadi Road in Nairobi. Investigators recovered a service-issued Ceska pistol assigned to Cheruiyot during the incident, with forensic ballistic testing confirming it as the weapon used in the execution.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made a breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu. Following an intensive and painstaking investigation over the past year, detectives have identified and arrested Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, suspected of being the gunman who fatally shot the lawyer,” the DCI confirmed in a statement on Thursday, September 24.
