United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has thrown weight behind President William Ruto’s ongoing push for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council, calling the continent’s continued exclusion unjust and indefensible.
Speaking on Wednesday during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York, Guterres stated that the current composition of the Security Council fails to reflect 21st-century geopolitical realities.
“Africa still has no permanent seat on the Security Council. A 21st-century Security Council without permanent African representation is unjust & indefensible,” Guterres posted on X (formerly Twitter).
