Two weeks before the first El Niño rains are expected to hit the capital, Nairobi City County says it has mapped out its flood hotspots, put agencies under one command and begun evacuating families living along the city’s rivers.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Monday received progress reports from the multi-agency teams preparing the city for the rains. The meeting brought together national government administrators, the National Police Service, Green Nairobi, the Kenya Red Cross, KURA, KeNHA and the Nairobi boroughs. These agencies will be working under a single command structure.
The county says it has identified 227 flood hotspots across Nairobi’s 17 sub-counties, and set up five sub-committees covering drainage, evacuation, shelter and relief, security and traffic, and communication.
