Poultry farmers in Homa Bay County are turning to black soldier fly larvae farming as an affordable, protein-rich alternative to commercial poultry feeds.
The practice is helping farmers cut production costs while promoting more sustainable farming methods. Some farmers say the larvae have also helped improve egg production among their birds.
Black soldier flies are kept in controlled environments, where they are provided with water and suitable surfaces, such as damp cardboard or fibre, on which to lay their eggs. Adult flies do not feed and require only water.
