Nakuru’s iconic jacaranda trees felled to pave way for road expansion

For many years, beautiful jacaranda trees have stood majestically along Nakuru’s streets, growing alongside a city that has transformed from a small urban centre into one of Kenya’s fastest-growing cities.
But as Nakuru expands, some of its mature trees are now being felled to make way for road expansion, raising questions about how the city can pursue development while preserving its green spaces.
Along Oginga Odinga Road, the familiar jacaranda trees are slowly disappearing. The trees are being cleared to pave the way for the dualling of the five-kilometre road, a project the Kenya Urban Roads Authority says will help decongest the city and accommodate rising traffic.
