Intrigues in the cement manufacturing business in Africa came to the forefront during the Lamu refinery groundbreaking ceremony, with leaders laying the blame at the doorstep of former French investor Lafarge.

Former Nigerian Head of State Olusegun Obasanjo said the company's investment in Africa was not done in good faith, while President William Ruto celebrated the takeover of the industry by Kenyans and East Africans in the country.

Obasanjo waded into the murky cement wars that dogged the continent, placing former large-scale foreign investor Lafarge at the centre of the dispute.

Noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases and cancers account for about 75% of deaths globally. Early detection is key to managing the scale of the problem. But thatโ€™s not always possible in rural communities, where there are often shortages of healthcare workers, long travel distances and financial barriers. Fragmented referral systems can also delay diagnosis and follow-up.

This gap in prevention and early detection is one we see often in rural South Africa. As a health researcher and biokineticist working in the countryโ€™s public sector, Iโ€™m interested in whether biokineticists could play a greater role in closing this gap.

Biokineticists are regulated health professionals who use exercise scientifically to promote health, prevent disease and support people living with chronic conditions. South Africa has an estimated 1,831 registered biokineticists, mostly in the private sector. They are scarce in public primary healthcare, particularly in rural communities.

President William Ruto has termed those opposed to the Ksh 2.2 trillion East African Refinery in Lamu County as extortionists saying the project is a strategic energy security investment for the country and the region.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony of the refinery being constructed by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote in Mokoye in Lamu County, President Ruto told off those opposing the project as brokers urging Kenyans to consider investing in the project.

โ€œSome of the people you see issuing statements left, right and centre and sponsoring court cases are actually extortionists. They are looking for an opportunity to be talked to somewhere in the corner,โ€ said Ruto.
