Beyond the rails: Opening new horizons for girls

For some girls, the journey to a better future begins in a classroom. For others, it begins in a place of refuge, on a train leaving behind a familiar neighbourhood, or on a stage where hundreds of young women are finally given an opportunity to be heard.
They may be different journeys, but they share one destination: opportunity.
As the world marks the International Day of the Girl, under the 2026 theme, “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights,” the challenge is clear. Girls need more than protection from the risks that threaten their futures. They need education, healthcare, safety, mentorship and platforms from which they can shape their own lives.
