Democrats have won control of both the US Senate and House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, delivering a major defeat to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
Voters in traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina, shifted toward Democrats, largely because of frustration over the war with Iran, rising living costs and dissatisfaction with Trump’s leadership.
In Texas, Democrats won a Senate seat and defeated Governor Greg Abbott. Kansas elected its first Democratic senator in nearly 100 years, while South Carolina rejected Trump’s preferred Senate candidate. Democrats also gained more than two dozen House seats.
