IG Kanja assures Moyale residents of security as thousands flee into Kenya

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has assured residents of Moyale and the wider Marsabit County of enhanced security following escalating violence in neighbouring Moyale, Ethiopia, which has forced thousands of people to flee across the border into Kenya.
Speaking during a security assessment visit to Moyale, Kanja said the government had deployed security teams to the border area to monitor the situation, prevent criminal activities and protect residents from the spillover effects of the conflict.
He said fighting, which erupted on October 22, 2026,had resulted in daily gunfire, forcing thousands of Ethiopians nationals to seek refuge in Kenya, with some integrating into local communities while others were accommodated in schools and other public institutions.
