The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has warned manufacturers and traders against displaying its quality certification mark on miraa-infused beverages, commonly known as jaba juice, after discovering that some businesses used permits issued for fruit juices and fruit drinks to market the products.

In a public notice dated October 16, 2026, KEBS said some manufacturers had used certification permits for approved products to market beverages containing khat, despite the permits only covering products within their approved certification scope.

“KEBS wishes to clarify that certification permits are valid only for the products covered by the approved scope of certification and do not extend to khat-infused beverages or any other products outside that scope,” the agency stated.
