The coming days will be critical to containing any further spread of Ebola in Kenya after the East African country recorded its first confirmed case in the current outbreak, the World Health Organization’s representative in Kenya said on Wednesday (October 7).

The Kenyan government informed the WHO on Tuesday (October 6) that the Ebola patient, a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years, had died, Dr Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo said. About 10 of the person’s relatives had been identified for contact tracing, she added.

Kenya is the fourth country to record a case linked to the Ebola epidemic in eastern Congo, the second largest on record with more than 8,000 cases.
