South Sudan is scheduled to hold general elections on 22 December 2026 โ€“ its first since independence. President Salva Kiir and his inner circle have repeatedly insisted that the elections will take place on that date.

The elections are meant to bring South Sudanโ€™s post-conflict transition to an end. Since 2018, a power-sharing government led by the South Sudan Peopleโ€™s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and including the major opposition party SPLM-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) has been ruling the country. The election would allow for this arrangement to be replaced by a government people have voted for.

The ruling party (SPLM) is already conducting its internal primaries to select aspirants.
