Tanzania’s main opposition leader, Tundu Lissu, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of incitement, despite being acquitted of treason charges in a politically contentious trial.
The verdict was delivered on Friday under tight security in Dar es Salaam, where police surrounded the courthouse as supporters gathered nearby.
Lissu, chairman of the opposition party CHADEMA, was arrested in April 2025 over a speech in which prosecutors accused him of urging supporters to “block the election” and “mobilise rebellion”.
