The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) will cease operations on October 31, marking the end of a two-year transition process and bringing to a close more than three decades of UN missions supporting peacebuilding and state-building in the Horn of Africa.
According to a statement issued by UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the mission’s closure follows Security Council resolutions 2753 (2024) and 2809 (2025), as well as a request by the Federal Government of Somalia.
The transition was guided by a roadmap jointly agreed upon by the Somali government and the United Nations. Under the arrangement, UNTMIS’s mandated functions have been transferred to Somali institutions and UN agencies, funds and programmes.
