The United States has escalated its long-standing opposition to the International Criminal Court (ICC), imposing direct sanctions on the institution and threatening to cripple its operations over attempts to exercise jurisdiction over American citizens.
The announcement, delivered by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, comes amid heightened global attention on international justice, coinciding hours after former ICC judge and South African jurist Navi Pillay was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting human rights.
Pillay, who served as a judge at the court from 2003 to 2008, was recognised for her work promoting human rights and international justice.
