Self-proclaimed pastor Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and 28 others have been convicted of 191 counts of murder in connection with the Shakahola tragedy, which claimed the lives of 190 children and one adult.
In a judgment delivered on Monday, October 19, 2026, the High Court in Malindi found that Mackenzie and his co-accused participated in an organised system of religious radicalisation and enforced fasting that led to the deaths of their followers.
Justice Diana Kavedza ruled that the prosecution had proved its case against all 29 accused persons beyond reasonable doubt, finding them individually and collectively guilty of murder.
