East African Legislative Assembly member Winnie Odinga was on Saturday symbolically crowned by the Luo Council of Elders to take up the political mantle of her late father, Raila Odinga, in a ceremony that could mark a defining turn in the battle over his political succession.
The coronation took place during an elders and veterans memorial service at Opoda farm in Bondo, Siaya County, where elders invoked tradition to thrust Ms Odinga towards a larger political role.
The ceremony was attended by her mother Ida Odinga, elder sister Rosemary Odinga, members of the Luo Council of Elders and the wider Odinga family.
