When someone dies with money in their bank account, their family may struggle to access the funds, especially if they do not know the account’s PIN or have the deceased person’s phone.
However, not knowing the PIN does not automatically mean the money is lost. In Kenya, families can pursue a legal process to identify, access and distribute money left behind by a deceased relative.
The process depends on the circumstances of the death, whether the person left a will and whether the family has obtained the necessary legal documents.
