NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 3 — Kenya’s Prof. Phoebe Okowa has secured re-election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a full nine-year term running from 2027 to 2036, bringing an end to a prolonged contest that went through multiple rounds of voting at the United Nations.
Okowa prevailed over Peru’s Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza in the third round, securing 13 votes in the 15-member United Nations Security Council against none for her Peruvian rival.
Her victory followed the withdrawal of three other candidates — Sierra Leone’s Prof Charles Chernor Jalloh, Ecuador’s Marcelo Vázquez-Bermúdez and South Korea’s Jin-Hyun Paik — ahead of the final ballot, narrowing the contest to a decisive face-off between Kenya and Peru.
