The United Nations Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) has rejected plans to shut down UNAIDS, instead backing a transition to strengthen the organisation and protect gains made in the global fight against HIV.
In a press release issued in Geneva on October 26, 2026, the board confirmed its support for a streamlined, efficient UNAIDS Joint Programme. Board members agreed that the changes must protect people living with, at risk of and affected by HIV while ensuring governments and communities maintain progress in the fight against the disease.
UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima welcomed the board’s decision, saying members had chosen to strengthen the programme rather than end its operations.
